How to Build Your First tportstick.yaml

I start with a blank file. Name it tportstick.yaml. No fluff.

Secrets? Never inline. I use external vault references like vault://secret/tportstick/api-key.

If your vault isn’t reachable, the config fails immediately. That’s better than silent runtime failure.

You test before you roll out. Every time. Run tportstick --dry-run --validate-only.

Exit code 0 means syntax and structure pass. Anything else? Stop.

Read the error. It’s usually a missing colon or wrong indentation (YAML is picky about whitespace. Yes, really).

Then I stress-test it. tportstick bench --config tportstick.yaml --duration 60s --concurrency 25. I watch the 95th percentile latency. If it spikes past 200ms, something’s off (maybe) DNS resolution or an overloaded endpoint.

If validation passes but runtime fails? Check UID/GID mismatches first. Then SELinux labels on mounted config files.
